Purpose Of The "Three Constitutions" Poster:

The "Three Constitutions" poster has two fundamental purposes:

1. To commemorate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, and to create a renewed and vibrant awareness of The Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights in the lives of millions of Americans; and
   
   
2. To remind the nation's school children that the promise of America is for everyone, and to inspire and encourage children all across the nation to dream great dreams.

A Little American History:

How many justices are on the United States Supreme Court? The answer, as established by the U.S. Congress in the Judiciary Act of 1869, is nine: one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices.

It is also true that 30 years or so from now, the nine justices currently on the U.S. Supreme Court will no longer be on the bench, and there will be nine new justices. Today, those nine new justices are in school somewhere in America.

We don't know, of course, who those students are, or where they are, but we do know that nine of them will someday be justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Someone in your child's school, perhaps, or in your child's class. Or, perhaps, your child.

Mr. Norman Manasa, founder and Director of The National Education Project, Inc., is a former employee of the Supreme Court of the United States, having served as aide to Chief Justice Warren E. Burger. When Mr. Manasa left the Supreme Court in 1979, he bought a $1 pocket-size copy of The Constitution of the United States in the Court's gift shop, and then went to say good-bye to each of the nine justices, asking them to sign the inside cover of the Constitution as a memento of his days at the Court. With remarkable graciousness, all the justices did.

Mr. Manasa later returned to the U.S. Supreme Court to work on the new computer system that would be used to publish the Court's opinions. On leaving the Court in 1982, he again went to say good-bye to the justices and they all once again graciously signed a pocket-size copy of the Constitution, the major difference being that Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, was now on the bench.

By remarkable coincidence, these two documents, as shown on the "Three Constitutions" poster, constitute two of the rarest historical documents in America; that is,

1. The only copy of The Constitution of the United States signed by all members of the last all-male United States Supreme Court; and
   
   
2. The only copy of The Constitution of the United States signed by all members of the first United States Supreme Court in the history of the country with a female justice.

And what about the signatures on the poster's third Constitution? Well, in America, that is up to your children and you.
